Ikigai & Finding Your Purpose

Before I started coaching, I never would’ve truly believed that was possible – even though I’ve done work that I really enjoyed, with people that I adored, at a purpose-driven organization in alignment with my values.

But that sense of true meaning and drive, my joy and reason for being, wasn’t something that I looked for in a workplace.

I love the Japanese word ikigai, which translates as a sense of purpose or reason for living. It can be used on a day-to-day basis (“My ikigai is coffee in the morning”) or at a more philosophical level.

This graphic is a westernized version, obviously seen through the lens of capitalism, and incorporates elements that are business-focused and not true to the original meaning of the word.

However, I like that it can help people lead with purpose and joy when considering career changes or life transitions.

Let’s acknowledge that you still need to pay for groceries, but when thinking about your choices and future path, wouldn’t it be great to come at it from a heart-centred meaning-driven place?

What’s your ikigai?
